Opequon Creek Project Team
Monitoring Bacteria and Macroinvertebrate Life in Local Creeks
OCPT took monthly samples from Opequon Creek and its tributaries from March 2007 through September 2009. These samples were for laboratory analysis of fecal coliform levels and E. coli bacteria (a subset of fecal coliforms) using the Coliscan Easygel method. The results appear in documents in table form and chart form in document #1, document #2,and document 3. Flow data is also presented for your reference in document #4. If you have Google Earth, click here to see a map of the monitoring sites. The Project Team has been involved in counting and identifying macroinvertebrates, which serve as a measure of water quality, and have been trained in advanced stream monitoring techniques (including muddy bottom methods) which include protocols for water quality analysis, physical characterizations and bioassessment of the benthic macroinvertebrate community. The Team will begin a macroinvertebrate monitoring program in 2010.
Project Benefits:
- learn more about current creek’s conditions
- provide information to inform the public about the creek’s health
- learn about creek’s improvements after clean-up projects are implemented
