Opequon Creek Project Team
Monitoring Bacteria and Macroinvertibrate Life in Local Creeks
In spring and summer of 2006, the Project Team was involved in counting and identifying stream bottom macroinvertebrates, which serve as a measure of water quality.Beginning in October 2006, the Project Team is taking monthly samples from Opequon Creek, and having them analyzed for fecal coliform levels. This is thanks to a WV Stream Partners grant. Beginning March 2007, they will also monitor for E. coli bacteria (a subset of fecal coliforms) using the Coliscan Easygel method. This is possible because of a donation from Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.
Project Benefits:
- learn more about current creek’s conditions
- provide information to inform the public about the creek’s health
- learn about creek’s improvements after clean-up projects are implemented
