Opequon Creek Project Team

Fun Floats

September 18, 2010 - The air had already begun to warm as the first paddles broke the cool, clear water of the Opequon Creek just after 10:00 Saturday morning.  The Opequon Creek Project Team’s (OCPT) annual Fun Float was underway as 50 local participants set out for a two mile trip downstream on the Creek.  The float began at the Van Metre Stone Bridge, off of Golf Course Road, and ended two and a half hours later, at a beautiful park like setting along the Creek.  The OCPT provided canoes, kayaks and life jackets to those who needed them and also transported participants to and from the launch and takeout sites.   A great lunch of pulled pork barbeque, burgers, hotdogs, salads, soft drinks and desserts for everyone ended the day as the group relaxed after the float.  Several participants had never been in a canoe or kayak and had the good fortune of that first experience on one of the gems of the Eastern Panhandle, the Opequon Creek.  Veteran OCPT members guided everyone through the “riffle” areas and it was a safe and for the most part, dry, adventure for all.   The OCPT looks forward to a similar turnout next year.  Spread the word and tell your friends about the Opequon and the OCPT.  A list of upcoming, scheduled events and public meetings can be found on the OCPT web site (www.opequoncreek.org) as well as information on becoming a member and volunteering to help this organization going forward. August 8, 2009 - Fifteen Opequon lovers manned canoes and kayaks to paddle the streatch of creek between Sulphur Springs Road and Paynes Ford Road.  The weather was perfect and we saw deer, green herons, kingfishers, mallards, white ducks, and turtles.  Photos
