Opequon Creek Project Team

Free Fishing Day

June 12, 2010 was the perfect day to be on the creek fishing and enjoying the water.  The Project Team sponsored a "Free Fishing Day" event at the Van Metre Stonebridge to introduce people to our group and to the inhabitants of the creek.  Several fishermen were on hand to help identify the day's catch and we had a small swimming pool at the creek's edge to hold the different species.  A number of children delighted in touching and seeing up close the Sunfish, Fallfish, Bass and Trout.  And, Than Hitt, Research Fish Biologist at Leetown Science Center was there to share is vast knowledge of the creek inhabitants.

In celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week, the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources designated this weekend, June 12 and 13, as the weekend when everyone can fish the waters of West Virginia without a license.

In the following videos, Than Hitt, Research Biologist describes the inhabitants of the Opequon Creek and then, using a sein net and some people who were out for a day on the water, he tried to capture fish.  According to Than, the seining video is really an example of poor sampling effort.  Typically we'd have 10 or so people running fish but in any case it shows the concept.
