Buffer In A Bag - Free Trees for Your Yard!
Streamside buffers are areas near streams that serve as protective barriers between the stream and different land uses--residential and farm. These buffers play an important role in protecting the quality of the stream. They filter pollutants and sediment from surface runoff, stabilize the stream bank and prevent erosion. They also provide food and habitat for wildlife.
By
creating or maintaining a buffer on your property, you increase the
quality of the stream and the value of
your property. Buffers prevent erosion that leads to stream bank
failure and
a loss
of land. While a properly installed and maintained buffer will
no
longer be available for livestock grazing or hay production, it is a
valuable
investment for improving the environment and protecting fields and
farms.
The Team has
announced
a pilot program for residents living in the area. If you live
in the Opequon watershed and would like to create a streamside buffer
of native trees and
shrubs
on your property, this is the program for you.
By participating, you will receive a mixture of 25 FREE trees and
shrubs
for planting in your yard.
